Shark Teeth

Today was a fun adventure digging for shark teeth.
Chrisi & Lewie were camping near Bakersfield and invited us to join them on a trip about 35 miles northwest of Tehachapi to try and dig for some shark teeth.
It was a really warm day - probably in the 90's, but armed with bottles of water, Derek and I headed out - bringing Shasta and Monkey in tow.

Not even to the digging spot and Shasta finds the bones of some poor deceased animal. She thought it was great fun to carry it in her mouth for a little while.

Here we are, starting to dig. Someone else was also there - but at the time, they had left for a while (I think they were just smarter and wanted to wait for it to cool off).

The poor dogs were SO hot - and panted like crazy. They tried to lay against the rock in the shade to cool down even a little.

Hey! Derek found a tooth within the first few minutes of digging. They're kind of fragile but very neat to see and find!

Michelyn is working really hard to find something of interest.

I found a tooth all by myself!!!

Chrisi and Lewie had great luck also finding some mica and petrified bone. They also brought their new little puppy, Gretchen (11 weeks old) and all three dogs got along really well.

Although slightly overheated, Shasta did not let that stop her from hunting for wild life. To our surprise, she actually caught a lizard (we could see the tail wiggling from her mouth) and then dropped it, batted it around once or twice, then ATE IT!!! Yuck!

Monkey did some exploring of his own. He was very proud to 'mark' some of the area as his.

View of the area where we found our dig site.

Spring in the Garden

Welcome Spring! The garden is still far from taking shape, but the frosts are over and the birds and blossoms are here!
I sat waiting for our first hummingbird visitor to come back for a picture. Man they're fast! But he's there perched on a tiny branch on the right side of the feeder.

Our tree starts to beareth fruit! - Any guesses? Maybe apricot?

Monkey & Shasta enjoying a beautiful Spring day!

Michelyn is very proud of the weeding she's done the last couple of weekends.

A moment for some home maintenance - Derek works on a sprinkler.
This wasn't in the garden, but our little Monkey baby is starting to lose his teeth!

Picnic at Brite Lake

Sunday afternoon (May 6th) we decided to go for a picnic by our very own Brite Lake. The dogs came with us and they LOVE running through the Lake, chasing birds, and finding gross things to lick on the ground. It was a lot of fun and a beautiful, although somewhat windy, day. Here are some pics:

Cinco de Mayo

To celebrate and have some fun, Derek and I went to the local Cinco de Mayo fiesta put on by the Tehachapi Park & Recs. It was a lot of fun. People commented that last year, there were about 20 people and this year there was probably over 500! The gym was just packed and they ran out of tables and chairs. There was food from a local Mexican food restaurant, a Mariachi band, and some folk dances by children and adults. They even had a raffle and lo and behold I won! It was the last prize of the night and they called probably three or four tickets before me - but I guess the other people went home and so I walked away with the dolly!! It may not have been a restaurant gift certificate, but it was free and so I like my new dolly a lot. :)
